The nonprofit Practical Action is teaching farmers in northern Peru ways to better grow crops and raise livestock - all through podcasts broadcasted on local radio stations.
What a great outreach idea. Radio is by far the most used communication mechanism in rural Peru, as it is in much of the developing world. And using podcasts to broadcast on the radio is cost effective - organizations don't have to travel to remote, local stations. Ready to
play podcasts are also more likley to get air time than written statements that the announcer must read.
The Daily Source Code, Adam Curry's podcast is now using a wiki for his shownotes. It is running on mediawiki and was set up by Michael Ridley.
I think this is great! Especially for niche podcasts, such as environmental organizations podcasting that want their listeners to contribute back and make their information repository richer.

I have just started playing with feedberner over the past couple of days and am amazed at how great the interface is and detailed the mextric is. I am not even using the pro account yet… but will probably upgrade by the end of the day :-) If you are blogging check out feedburner.

Yesterday CBS launched part of its new 24-hour internet news service. What's particularly interesting is that they decided on this approach rather than creating a 24-hour cable news service like most of their competitors.
"Kramer calls CBS' venture a 'cable bypass.' Heyward said the new venture would target a large, particularly at-work audience that isn't reached by TV.
'There's a very demographically desirable group of news consumers, especially during the day, that does not want to consume news in the traditional way and may not want to watch our traditional newscasts,' Heyward said Tuesday." Read the article.
Wooohooo – we have wifi. Ian and I brought our router in this morning from the office and it just plugged it in. We are downtown for the first half of the week attending the Web for Development Conference at the World Bank “Telling the Development Story to the World.”Some highlights from yesterday...There was a very interesting mix of conservatives who are nervous about interactive components of sites saying “blogs are not the answer,” and some provocative forward thinkers in the first session “Making Key Connections – A Content Odyssey”.Interactive sites-
Yep, John Edwards came out with his first podcast this week, joining the few other politicians who have tried out the medium. Something that makes his podcast a little different is that his website encourages people to send in their questions and says that Edwards will answer the questions in his podcast, as well as talk about the issues he wants to talk about--this week being partly NCAA basketball. The podcast is available at his website, www.oneamericacommittee.com.
On Friday, the Washington Post ran two articles on podcasting:
The Washington Post today ran an article on Godcasting--podcasting about God. Most podcasts are actually Godcasts, or as the Post puts it "there's lots more God on iPod than jazz, theater or movie reviews."
The Post found some preachers that say they like to podcast because, not surprisingly, it doesn't cost much. Making a religous TV show or even a radio broadcast costs money and leads to the preachers spending at least part of their time on air asking for donations. With podcasting, they don't have to.
An interesting reason why the Post says Godcasting is so popular is reaching out to "snow birds." Retirees wintering in Florida or anywhere can still listen to their favorite preachers and be connected to their church.
This article isn't up on the Post online yet, but I'll update this once it is.
The NYT published an article today stating that TV news stations, especially local ones, are commonly including federal goverment produced video clips in their broadcasts. These segments look and are presented as objective reporting, and TV stations aren't accrediting them to the public relations firms who created them.
Even scarier is that a December Gallup poll found that 51% of Americans get their news from local TV every day.
The commercialization of podcasting? Adam Curry might be talking about podcasting but he is also talking about a fundamental change in the way marketing works. While podcasting didn't really exist before August 2004 it is now not only moving into the mainstream, it is taking the great American leap of trying to be profitable – at least for a few people. So where is the money in a free service that targets an often small and selected listener basis?
Just like blogs it is in the targeting advertising. And now you don't need to wait for the sponsors to come to you. You can choose who and what you want to advertise and start earning click-through cash royalties from companies as such Amazon. com, Cdnow.com and Disney.com.
Yes, this really works - Adam Curry has sold over 23 Senseo coffee makers after putting a link on his site to Amazon.com. I brought him to number 24 last night after caving in and buying one. It has nothing to do with the link on his site... the link is only serving as a tracking mechanism for him, relaying to Amazon who he is referring that makes purchases. What sells them is him talking about them.
To watch NBC 4's story on podcasting that aired this Friday with interviews from Eric and EchoDitto's Tim Jones, go to www.nbc4.com, scroll down to Feedroom Video, and click "Podcasting Moves to Mainstream." The clip didn't play for me in Firefox but worked in IE.
