Washington, DC Drupal Meetup + Round Robin Foosball Tournament Tonight
Communications Strategist

Come Out for Drupal, Beer, and Foosball

Come Out for Drupal, Beer, and Foosball

Tonight we're having our monthly Drupal meetup at Stetson's Bar and Restaurant. Usually Washington, DC is a ghost town in August with Congress shutting its doors and most people fleeing the heat. But this August is definitely an exception - Congress has stuck around longer than usual and its downright comfortable outside. So we're expecting a fun get together tonight.

We'll start off with the usual round of 5-minute lighting talks. This is the time to share what you're working on with the group, and it's a great way to lead into more detailed conversations later on in the evening. So far we have two speakers on the docket - Mike Haggerty and Andy Laken, who will be saying goodbye too as he moves to Montana. Also, Addison Berry will be making an appearance tonight, so hopefully we can twist her arm to present as well. If you would like to talk, just post over here and come ready.

After last month's highly competitive, post-meetup foosball games, we've decided there is an obvious need for a more foosball action. So tonight we'll be having the first ever DC Drupal Round Robin foosball tournament. Come ready to play and with some quarters in your pocket.

If you're not in Washington, DC tonight or just can't break away, you can still follow what's happening at the Drupal meetup. Ron will be streaming the presentations on Ustream, and I'll be streaming some videos to Qik, like this one. We'll be sending out notifications of when we're streaming via twitter here and here, but it will likely be from about 7:30 to 8:30 pm tonight.

Come Talk Shop with Others Using Drupal

Come Talk Shop with Others Using Drupal

Looking to fill the lazy days of summer with more Drupal? You're in luck. The next Drupal meetup in Washington, DC is in just a few days on Monday, July 14th  at Stetson's Bar and Restaurant. Lately the meetups have been drawing a crowd - 40+ people came out for each of the last three meetups. So no matter if you're a new or potential Drupal user, a new-to-Drupal programmer, and an expert hacker, there will be plenty of interesting people to talk to and learn from.

As always, we'll have several 5-minute lightening round presentations, so if you've been working on an interesting project or module, or have a question to pose to the group, be prepared to speak - and quickly. So far Jeff has offered to speak about the Spaces module and its roadmap, and Alex will talk briefly about aggregation in Drupal 7. The floor is open to anyone, so don't be shy. It would be great to have some newer Drupal programmers talk about what they're working on or a challenge they're facing and to hear from some new Drupal users about their experiences or how their organization decided to make the switch to Drupal.

More details are over in the DC Drupal group, and you can rsvp there or on Upcoming.org.

Meet Drupal Developers and Users and Talk About Your Latest Projects

Meet Drupal Developers and Users and Talk About Your Latest Projects

The next Drupal Meetup is right around the corner. This coming Monday, May 12, we'll be meeting at Stetson's Bar and Restaurant at 7:00 pm to get together and talk Drupal. We'll be in the room upstairs.

As usual we'll kick off the meeting with several five minute lightening round talks. This is your chance to share your latest project or module with the group. Since this meetup is for people of all levels of Drupal expertise - including experts, newbies, those interested in becoming newbies, and users - we do ask that you focus on the big picture needs and functions and keep out the Drupal jargon.

So far, we have these talks on the schedule.

  • Showcase of Green Media Toolshed: A community-powered set of tools for communications experts that allows them to create and customize group workspaces - and control the branding and urls. This is done with new advances made the to context module.
  • Announcement of ChinaOSL, a two month long code camp happening this summer in Bejing

If you want to talk, post your topic here or come prepared to take over the floor.

Come Out to Meet Drupal Developers, Users, and People Interested in Learning More

This coming Monday on April 14th we'll hold the next Washington, DC Drupal Meetup at James Hoban's right on Dupont Circle at 7:00 pm. This is a great chance to come out and meet Drupal developers and users, and see what cool tools people have built with Drupal.

We'll kick off the meetup with a round of 5-minute lightening talks focusing on real world solutions that have been built with Drupal. We all know Drupal does amazing things, so let's look at some of the tailored tools we've built to help our clients out. Here's what we've got lined up so far:

  • Connecting a geographically dispersed microfinance network with an online portal
  • Publishing content in right to left languages like Arabic and Hebrew
  • Demo of the online community MothersClick (to be confirmed)
  • Talk on how newspapers are using Drupal and what it's doing for them by Ken Rickard who will be town

Have something show off? Post it in the comments over in the Washington, DC Drupal group. Dan from 1 Well will also be there to talk about how he's helping (and how you can too) to build wells in communities that need them.

Mixing the Mashup with the Media: Washington, DC Media Makers Meetup on May 1

Share Your Work with Mashups and Demo Your Favorites

Share Your Work with Mashups and Demo Your Favorites

The DC Media Makers just announced their next meetup, and it will be all about the media mashup. This should be fun. It will be great to learn about  ways that media people have put mashups to use. There will be time for people to demo what they've done, so there should be plenty of opportunities to see what's possible and to see the mashups in action.

Eric and I, and possibly some other people from the office, will be attending. We were talking about the meetup this morning and how we're both particularly excited to find out more about what video tools people are finding most useful, specifically to add time stamps and meta data to content. Eric experimented with Viddler to do this awhile back and found it to be a great tool. I'm sure he'd be happy to show it off too : ) We're both curious as to what else is out there.

Hopefully we'll leave the meetups with a few great ideas for other mashup experiments!
