Come on Out and Toast Technology This Week
Feliz Cinco de Mayo! As you're dusting off your sombrero, munching on a taquito, and preparing to salt a few margaritas tonight, take a look at some of the great tech events happening in DC this week. There's a lot going on in the local art scene this week, and we've included some of the events with a tech element here to put them on your radar. Here's a run down of the events we're hoping to attend, with a surprising number of them taking place during the day. That just leaves you more time for those margaritas.
Monday
11:00 am - 12:15 pm
Open Source, Open Education and Eco-friendly: Can Sharing Improve Policy? - Start the week off by listening to Scott McNealy of Sun Microsystems talk about how openness and sharing can improve public policy and international development.
Tuesday - Saturday
7: 00 pm and 9:30 pm
Screenings of the Washington, DC 48 Hour Film Project: People had exactly 48 hours to write, shoot, and edit a seven-minute movie over the weekend. Now it's time for us to see what they came up with.
Thursday:
10:00 - 11:30 am
SKOS in the Context of Semantic Web Deployment - Are you in the school of thought that the semantic web will be the next online revolution? Come out for this talk introducing the Simple Knowledge Organization System (SKOS), a soon-to-be-completed W3C standard for publishing thesauri, classification schemes and subject headings as linked data online, and find out how the Library of Congress is participating in the semantic web.
Friday:
8:30 am
DC OpenCoffee: Want to get more done over your morning coffee? This meeting, the first of what may turn into a weekly event, is meant to help entrepreneurs, developers, and investors connect and share ideas before they officially start their day.
6:00 pm - 1:00 am
Artomatic: Friday is opening night of Artomatic, the month long exhibit of local art and artists from across the spectrum. This is one of DC's best art exhibits, and opening night is a chance to listen to meet the artists, listen to local bands, and help yourself to some drinks and snacks. We're (especially Tim) very excited for Bryanna's collage exhibit.
6:00 - 8:00 pm
New Community ArtSpace Spring Show: ArtSpace is a really great local initiative that provides art education to kids and adults at affordable rates. Come out to the show to see some of their work, ranging from darkroom photography to pottery to photoshop, and enjoy some delicious Peruvian food while you browse.
Have a great week! And as always, you can see a full listing of tech events taking place in Washington, DC at DC Tech Events.
