Podcasting to Farmers

Enedina Sauñe Calderón plantingThe nonprofit Practical Action is teaching farmers in northern Peru ways to better grow crops and raise livestock - all through podcasts broadcasted on local radio  stations.

What a great outreach idea. Radio is by far the most used communication  mechanism in rural Peru, as it is in much of the developing world. And  using podcasts to broadcast on the radio is cost effective - organizations don't have to travel to remote, local stations. Ready to
play podcasts are also more likley to get air time than written statements that the announcer must read.

I hope more nonprofits start experimenting with podcasting public service announcments. It's possible for nonprofits to train entire towns on disease prevention and health remedies, basic finances, and small business management in their language and specific to their community's needs. Organizations maintain full control of content and they can archive their messages publicly online. The best part is that the organization wouldn't have to convince people to take time off of work and away from their families to attend a training - they can
listen in from anywhere.

Listen to the podcasts (Spanish).

Read about it in the BBC.
