Craig's List helping Katrina victims in many ways
Craig's List is really becoming a hub for those who want to help people affected by Hurricane Katrina. Their New Orleans section
not only has a section to post for missing friends and relatives, but
also for temporary housing and employment and relief resources. Check
out the housing sections for all areas hit or taking in refugees.
People from all over the country are offering free or affordable
housing to victims of Hurricane Katrina. It's really neat to see how
many postings there are in all categories but particularly from people willing to take in families
affected and help them get back on their feet. If you're looking for ways to help refugees from New Orleans or anywhere that was affected, go to Craig's List.

Duplicated Efforts
It's been really neat to see the outpouring of donations and aid by
individuals across the country, and to see how different people are
using websites and online tools to help and fill gaps. Unfortunately,
in some cases it seems like efforts and work is being repeated. Read
the Washington Post article
for more. I wonder if the Red Cross will try to become the hub for
efforts like this, and how it will work for a large organization like
that to work so closely with individual and community contributions.
helping katrina victims
My friends and I really want to help Katrina victims. We live in the MD/DC area and would like to assist any group or organization with the relief effort. Please email us if you know of any local groups that could use volunteers.
Volunteering in DC
Harriet, I don't know of any specific organizations that are accepting volunteers but the DC Armory has taken and will continue to take evacuees so you might be able to help there. Craig's List has a ton of postings so I would look there too. You could always start your own fundraiser too. For inspiration, check out this article from the USA Today.
HurricaneHousing.org
MoveOn.org
is providing a service to search for free housing by distance from New
Orleans and other areas. What a great idea and with their email
campaign for it, they've already had more than 55,000 beds offered up.
Go to HurricaneHousing.org if you'd like to open up your house to Katrina victims.
