For the first time, you can find out how much all that time you spend on your blog is worth. Thanks to Tristan Louis' research and Dane Carlson's applet, you can type in your url and see what someone might pay for it based on its Technorati ranking and what AOL paid for Weblogs, Inc. Jeff first checked this blog's "worth" on November 3rd. We crossed our fingers that a "$0.00" would come up and were pretty delighted to see that according to this, it was worth $2,822.70. So I was shocked when I checked it today! The credit goes to Eric for the increase -- his Brownie ringtone and its press coverage has really increased traffic and links. |
This reinforces what we preach to our clients -- that starting a conversation through your website with others increases your site's readership. Starting this conversation, at least one that's not entirely one-sided, can be hard, especially for people with little blog experience. One piece of advice we typically give is to not just link to sites on the same topic but to cite them and write about what they're talking about and add an opinion. Everyone, especially bloggers, likes a shout out. Flattery goes a long way and criticism can go even further (constructive ideally, but if you're just going for numbers...). This way you'll be more likely to start a real dialog, and get a link back.
So thanks Dane and Tristan for this!
