That was easy.  We upgraded the Development Seed Blog from Drupal 4.5 to 4.6.  It's great to be able to use 4.6 and get used to the new organization, new features, new interfaces, etc.  Drupal.org runs on the latest head version of Drupal itself.  Oracle runs its internal operations on the latest snapshot of its database.  So do many other software companies.  Many do not.  I was talking to someone who worked w/ RDB where internal operations were not run on the head or latest release of the database.  They did not eat their own dog food - their customers did, and this caused major and even critical operations problems for many companies, when the company had the guts to upgrade to the newest release of the database.

What do Oracle and Drupal and other companies and projects benefit from running on the head versions of their software? ...thousands of bug checkers, testers, and a real environment to test the software.  Every user of the software becomes an opportunity to improve the code if they are given the right outlets to report problems, issues, bugs, and features.  The better the code and the more reliable the software, upgrades that will help the client are not painful, but actually a valuable opportunity to make the move to the upgrade that should make their processes and work easier.  If the transition is not smooth, you could end up sinking your own client - no business wants to do that.

We're careful to setup, configure, and use a Drupal release before we offer it to a client.  Using Drupal since 4.0, Development Seed is aware of the differences between 4.0 and 4.6 or 4.5.2 and 4.6.  When we upgrade a client, we're careful to identify the major differences from the administrator and user point of view in order to make the transition smooth, and get clients onto a newer version when it can improve their work.  Contact us if you are our client or would like to become a client and need to upgrade your Drupal-based website.  We will help you analyze your situation and identify advantages and disadvantages to upgrading.  Also, if you want to try out a new feature not available on your current deployment contact us about setting up a sandbox to let you see new features in action.
