Residents may bring computers and other items for environmentally safe recycling on April 23rd

(Washington, DC) This spring, DC Mayor Anthony A. Williams' focus on the environment highlights the important issue of recycling obsolete electronics. As part of the District's celebration of Earth Day numerous agencies District wide are putting events together for GreenDC Week, April 18th – 23rd.

The Office of the Clean City, DPW – Office of Recycling, The George Washington University, and several other community partners are hosting a free electronics recycling collection event for Washington, DC residents on Saturday, April 23rd, at the Rock Creek Park - Carter Barron Amphitheatre parking lot on 16th and Kennedy Streets, NW, Washington, DC.

e-Cycling your end-of-life electronics keeps harmful components out of landfills and supports the recovery and reuse of valuable materials. This e-Cycling event will accept any make or model of computers and related equipment, including computers, monitors, printers, scanners, keyboards, mice, and laptops. All computer monitors and TV screens must be intact—not cracked, punctured or shattered. In addition, residents can recycle other household items such as:

* Electronics (Appliances such as stoves, refrigerators and microwaves will NOT be accepted.)
* Cell phones
* Consumer batteries (dry cell)
* Inkjet, laser, and copier cartridges
* White foam packaging

As part of Motorola’s RACE TO RECYCLE Program, your recyclable cell phones will support the Anacostia Sr. High School.

Recycle your foam packing. Expanded polystyrene or EPS is a rigid foam material marked with the number 6 inside the recycling identification symbol. It is the white foam cushioning used to protect cameras, DVD players, computers, and other fragile items during shipping. Just drop off your clean, white EPS at the e-Cycling Event.

The other community partners hosting the event include the Office of the Federal Environmental Executive, Dell, Inc., Association for Quality Education, Inc., Whole Foods Market, UNICOR, the Department of Veterans Affairs, and the Alliance of Foam Packaging Recyclers.
