HitMaps: Testing Graphical Display on a Tiny World Map
This is a test of a way to see where our users of the blog are coming from. This is free... I guess we will see if it really begins tomorrow.
For more information go to http://kmi.open.ac.uk/projects/hitmaps/

Where are visitors to this page?
(Auto-update daily since 15-06-04)
[Here are some notes from teh HitMaps site]
HitMaps' algorithms are based on the need to provide both speed and scaleability: on the Climateprediction.net site, for example, the locations of more than 50,000 users, obtainable indirectly from an 'IP -> Latitude/Longitude conversion service' can be seen at a glance. All Geographical Information Systems have to do something similar, but the key is getting past a potentially catastrophic bottleneck when trying to do this in real time for a very large number of users.
The display maps for ClimatePrediction.net (active users), BuddySpace (visitors to the site), and the personal pages of Jiri Komzak, Martin Dzbor, and Marc Eisenstadt, now include a thumbnail display with a live daily update, which in turn links to larger maps of different views for world, continent, and a few country maps. This makes a particulary nice tracking tool for blog-site 'gutters', for which blog owners like to include convenient pointers, links, and summary features.

Who are all those people from Uruguay???
Well the map is working.... it is really neat! I was trying to figure out why we were having trafic from Uruguay and why nothing was coming up from Peru, where Ian is now working on site. I checked the IP address that he last posted from... 200.121.217.88 and then went to: http://psacake.com/web/eg.asp to find out where the IP was located.
Sure enough the IP addresses from Ayacucho Peru are from Uruguay.
See results below:

Yes I just noticed this too. Look up directly w/ ARIN shows LACNIC's details. Here's LACNIC's site: http://lacnic.net/en/index.html.
only the thumbnail map is tin
only the thumbnail map is tinny: when clicked you'll get the full page view - updates are overnight, hence the 1-day starting delay
-Marc (Eisenstadt) from the HitMaps team!
Thank you Marc
I am excited to use this application! If I like how it works on our blog I might pass it on to some of my clients down in Latin America that would love to see a graphical interpretation of where there users are coming from. Feel free to share any stories about your project and team here...
